Escaping the Temple Level 1
Skill Challenge XP 500
The temple is collapsing in on itself and you must escape before you are sealed within.
The PCs must find a way to escape from the temple before it completely collapses.
Complexity
5 (requires 12 successes before 3 failures)
Primary Skills
Acrobatics, Athletics, Dungeoneering, Endurance, Perception
Other Skills
Religion, Thievery
Victory
The PCs escape the crumbling temple just before it crushes them to death, and they watch the last slabs of rock block up the entrance from the safety of the forest clearing.
Defeat
The PCs are crushed in the collapse of the temple. Each PC loses all remaining healing surges and must make three DC 25 Endurance checks to attempt to climb out of the rubble. If all three checks fail, the PC is dead and the body is later recovered by the surviving PCs.
Special: Grabbing Treasure
A PC can attempt to grab an as-yet unclaimed treasure parcel on the way out. This is declared when a primary skill check for the skill challenge is made; the check has a -5 penalty applied. (Also see Thievery, below.)
Special: Overland Flight
PCs with overland flight earn one automatic success for the group.
Special: Recovering Bodies
A PC can attempt to recover a body left elsewhere in the cavern on the way out, provided that the PC is heading in the general direction of the location of the body. This is declared when a primary skill check for the skill challenge is made; the check has a –5 penalty applied.
Acrobatics
DC 10 A successful check counts as a success on the skill challenge.
The PC dodges out of the way of falling columns and the collapsing floor. Alternatively, the PC can wriggle through spaces that got a little too tight when the collapse began.
Athletics
DC 10 A successful check counts as a success on the skill challenge.
The PC jumps, climbs and runs to safety, using raw physical power to negotiate the hazards.
Dungeoneering
DC 10 A successful check counts as a success on the skill challenge.
The PC knows the ins and outs of lost temples, and how to successfully avoid hazards while negotiating a collapsing structure.
Endurance
DC 10 A successful check counts as a success on the skill challenge.
The PC endures the choking dust to find escape.
Perception
DC 10 A successful check counts as a success on the skill challenge.
The PC looks for cracks and splits in the stone, falling debris and shortcuts on the way out.
Religion
DC 15 A success or failure on this check does not count as a success or failure on the skill challenge.
The PC knows of other cults that have rigged their temples to collapse, and what may be expected. The PC receives a +2 bonus to the next check in the skill challenge.
Thievery
DC 15 A success or failure on this check does not count as a success or failure on the skill challenge.
The PC can make a Thievery check to grab an as-yet unclaimed treasure. If the check is successful, the PC does not take a penalty to the primary skill check.

Skill Challenge complexity guidelines

  • 1 (requires 4 successes before 2 failures)
  • 2 (requires 6 successes before 3 failures)
  • 3 (requires 8 successes before 4 failures)
  • 4 (requires 10 successes before 5 failures)
  • 5 (requires 12 successes before 6 failures)

Set a level for the challenge and DCs for the checks involved. As a starting point, set the level of the challenge to the level of the party, and use moderate DCs for the skill checks.

If you use easy DCs, reduce the level of the challenge by one. If you use hard DCs, increase the level of the challenge by two. You can also adjust the level of the challenge by reducing the number of failures needed to end the challenge. Cut the number of failures needed in half, and increase the level of the challenge by two. (You can also mix DCs in the same challenge.)
